In recent decades, Systems Engineering (SE) has seen drastic changes both in Russia and all over the world. Meanwhile, Russian higher schools have lost their Soviet-era expertise in teaching SE formerly known as “systems science” (Russ. системотехника). As a result, present-day graduates are unable and often not willing to assume the responsibility and be in charge of developing complex engineered systems and their fundamental principles, i.e. architecture. In our talk, we will share our experience in teaching SE in Russia’s leading technical universities, Bauman Moscow State Technical University and St. Petersburg State Electrotechnical University (LETI). Besides learning programmes per se, the discussion will touch upon a wide range of results gained. Among them is a proven combined approach to teaching Systems and Software Engineering for software engineering / IT students and a recently opened in Bauman MSTU master’s degree program on Systems Analysis & Architecture of Information Systems with Methodology of Systems Engineering as a major discipline.
